How to start a podcast

STEPS TO START A PODCAST

1. CHOOSE YOUR PERSONA ON YOUR PODCAST

You have to choose your persona that you will use on your podcast. Three of four of these were discussed on the podcast.

  1. Student – position of a learner
  2. Sage – share what you know
  3. Sidekick – add humor, interpret what the host is saying
  4. Struggler – discuss problems and challenges you are encountering.
2. GET GOOD PRODUCTION EQUIPMENT

To have a good podcast you need basic equipment. Here are some of the basics discussed on these episodes.

  1. A microphone. Kymone uses this audio technica microphone.
  2. Program to record audio and edit it.
  3. Software to record interviews remotely. Kymone uses skype recorder or belive.tv
3.  BE PROFESSIONAL WHEN SETTING UP INTERVIEWS

For the ideas to life podcast, interviewees come from three categories.

  1. Friends of Kymone that he admired.
  2. Referrals. Someone connecting with an interviewee.
  3. Reaching out to people directly.

Here is the process for reaching out to people.

  1. Send out professional email using a template. Give them an overview of podcast including previous guests and length of time for interview.
  2. Use scheduling website for interviewees to pick time that works for them. Kymone uses Calendly.com
  3. Have a template of basic questions and with the email.
4. HOW TO GET WORD OUT ABOUT YOUR PODCAST

As much as possible have a well-defined, niche. Get a common thread in all your episodes. People look based on a particular need.

  1. First 8 weeks are important in being promoted in itunes
  2. Have good podcast art.
  3. Build buzz before putting out the first episode
  4. Encourage people to take action after listening
  5. Use social media
  6. Build a tribe.
  7. Use email lists.
